Spearmint essential oil is extracted from the flowering aerial tops and leaves of Mentha spicata L., through the process of steam distillation. Spearmint is a great commercial cultiver, growing in moist, nutrient-rich soils that are well drained and have access to sun.

Identification:

Spearmint essential oil is a colorless to pale yellow, clear mobile liquid. It contains less menthol than peppermint, but it is rich in limonene, dihydrochalcone, and cineol and has a sweeter taste than peppermint. The main chemical constituents are carvone 40% and limonene 20%,  1,8-cineole 17%, β-pinene 2.2% and others. 

The chemical composition of this essential oil makes it one of the super essential oils with a wide range of applications from aromatherapy, massage, food and beverage, pharmaceutical ingredient and a host of industrial applications.

Spearmint oil is a major ingredient in toothpaste, breath mints, chewing gum, candy, tea and many other foods and applications. Spearmint oil also promotes fresh breath and is used frequently in cooking, baking and making marinades.

Indications (benefits from use of product):

Spearmint essential oil is a herbal extract/product. The oil  has great amtyi-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and cooling properties and is beneficial for relieving muscle pain, arthritis-related joint discomfort, reduce redness and swelling and kill acne-causing bacteria, reducing stress and anxiety to balancing hormones, headaches and several digestive benefits.

How to Use:

Internal Use (Ingestion): A drop of pure spearmint oil added to a glass of warm water, or your cup of tea, has been known to improve a bloated stmach, or after a heavy meal. 

Massage and Spa therapy: 1 drop for every 100 drops of carrier oil can be used in massage or after a workout to ease sore muscles or massage over abdomen to help calm an upset stomach.

Hair sheen: The oil helps attract and retain moisture in your scalp and hair follicles. This makes it easier for your natural hair to grow and stay healthy. Simply add a few drops to your shampoo to help refresh dull and greasy hair.

Other Uses

Using a Diffuser/Humidifier: In aromatherapy, peppermint essential oil can help unclog your sinuses and offer relief from a scratchy throat. Use three to four drops in diffuser of choice with 100ml of clean water to generate the vapour. Diffuse spearmint and eucalyptus essential oils to relieve seasonal allergies symptoms. Apply two to three drops topically to your temples, chest and back of neck.

Flavorant for foods and beverages: A few drops to your smoothies or drinks can give a refreshing taste to a beverage. The oil helps to fight off bacteria and other stomach issues.

Cosmetic and Perfumery use: Spearmint essential oil is a mildly spicy note that is cooling and sweet at the same time. Perfumers can use the oil in differing strengths and blends for fragrance oils in roller bottles, candle wax for burners, reed diffusers in homes, splashes and air fresheners, among the many uses.


 

Side effects and management in event of misuse/ingestion:

Side effects of spearmint oil are rare and spearmint is thought to be safe for most people to use. However, to every rule there is an exception.

Misuse could result into contact dermatitis (allergic reaction on the skin), heartburn and sleepiness or slowed breathing.

Wilful misuse of Spearmint oil can take the form of oral ingestion or use of undiluted concentrate in excess proportions. In both instances, decontamination will be necessary, and in the case of oral ingestion and allergic reaction, seek the help of a medical practitioner. In the case of skin reactions, consult a dermatologist.

Spearmint oil may be toxic when ingested in high doses. Ingestions of pure oil (≥1 drops) can lead to severe symptoms. You should never ingest pure neat oils.

The raw oil concentrate is generally well tolerated in low doses when ingested (<2 drops ). However, you should not take this oil orally, except as a prescription, or as part of a culinary preparation. Pregnant and nursing women are particularly cautioned to avoid using the essential oil without medical guidance.

The oil should be applied on the skin, but should not be applied to the face. It should be diluted to minimise the risk of skin irritation. A skin test is recommended prior to use. Spearmint oil must never be used near the eyes, inner ears, or on any other particularly sensitive areas of skin.

Individuals who suffer from allergic sensitivities could potentially experience skin irritations with the use of this essential oil.
