Holy Basil essential oil

Aadrea Holy Basil (tulsi) essential oil (sometimes called “sweet basil oil” or the Queen of Oils) is extracted from the leaves and branchlets of Ocimum basilicum L. (or Ocimum sanctum ) of the Lamiaceae or mint plant family, through the process of steam distillation.

Tulsi plant was a symbol of purity and used for a range of physical, mental and spiritual purposes, and over years became referred to as “sacred” or “holy” basil to many faiths and religions. In Ayurvedic treatments, particulalry, Holy Basil essential oil is one of the more regulalry used oils across all doshas, Pitta, Vata and Kapha.

The essential oil is pale yellow to yellowish in colour, with a warm, sweet odour. The active component(s) in a typical oil sample are eugenol (65 – 73%), β-elemene (11 %), β-caryophyllene (7 – 8%) and Germacrene D (2.4%) and others.

How to Use:

Aromatherapy: Holy Basil essential oil helps relieve stress and reduce anxiety. Achieve this through topical applications, such as a roller perfume or solid perfume, or through a diffuser blend. Diffuse using 4-5 drops per 100 mL of water or use in a personal inhaler. You could also apply the oil, topically, along your spine, bottoms of the feet, and pulse points.

Flavorant: You may use limited portions of the oil to flavour cuisines in soups and salads, curries, poultry, and seafood. You may as well use in beverages like green tea or mocktails. A single drop is in most cases sufficient for a food-meal preparation, or a toothpick dip for the case of beverages per cup. A lot of the internal benefits already outlined above are achieved when the oil is used as a flavorant.

Facial: Place some 5-10 drops of Tulsi in a bowl of hot water; place a towel over your head and lean your face over the steam, to obtain both the benefits of steam on your facial skin as well as from the oil. The oil is used neat or in blends with other citrus and floral oils (lavender, frankincense, and others).
